For the last month Jeunesse en Mission has been working to re-start a sanitation program in the city of St. Marc. By using a flatbed one ton truck, trailer and skid loader that was donated, along with work crews and men from “Le Programme” (Men’s Discipleship Program operated by Freeman Nettles) a daily trash collection has begun to take shape.
Every morning at 5:30am a crew goes out and collects trash from barrels that YWAM has placed in high volume areas around the city. They also scoop up any piles of trash that are left lying in the middle of the road. Once the trailer is full it is hauled to a set place outside the city for dumping. One of our main goals is to keep an important river in the city clean that was previously stocked full of trash. In order to cover gas, vehicle wear and tear (which is a very real factor in Haiti!) and employment, donations are taken from the residents and vendors of St. Marc. This is helping in the process of changing the mentality of the people and yes, they are giving!
A key factor in the physical cleaning of the city is the prophetic act it represents. As we expose and clean the garbage in the physical realm we hope that it will spill over into the spiritual realm to create a hunger to expose and clean the hearts of the people. So far after one month the river is still clean, the mentality of the people is starting to change and we are encouraged to keep going forward in this transforming tool for our city!
