Bon Fwi Television

Haitian TV is very basic. People pay you to throw up commercials, and then you make some homemade stuff to go along with it. Our local TV stations work deals with people who want to play their shows at certain hours, and whatever time they cannot cover they use playing pirated movies or re-directing ESPN soccer to their channel.

Saint Marc is smack in the middle of Haiti, which means TV stations that put their base here have the potential to boost their signal to reach the whole nation. But do they realize the power and responsibility they have? Bon Fwi is a 1 hour weekly program started by Kristian Snow that is pioneering the way on what fun Christian TV should look like. Never before has the gospel been so fun, or so practical, to the potential 200,000 viewers who can watch our show.

Bon Fwi translates to “The Good Fruit” and is a Biblically grounded, easy-going 1 hour weekly program about bringing the best of Haiti’s people to the spotlight in a fun, positive and encouraging style. Its markedly different from other TV programs because it’s clean & encouraging with a strong Christian focus. Its name comes from John 15:16-17 where Jesus speaks of bearing lasting fruit in following God’s command to love one another. We also get involved with issues in the city; bringing up important questions to things previously ignored. Why do we throw trash in the streets? Why do we see old people as burdens rather than assets of wisdom? Why can’t politicians fulfill their promises? Every week varies as we broadcast news, documentaries, music videos, creative teachings and so much more!

Our television show has had the opportunity of influencing thousands with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and at a level far deeper than a baseline message. They are seeing God’s kingdom in action by examples they can relate to. Instead of hearing about what a Christian is like, they are seeing it through real models in their society that we on the show call ‘good fruit’. They are for once watching clean television that is even funnier and more exciting than the blaring music videos that seem to drain rather than refresh. When our Bon Fwi broadcast closes, they feel touched and better about themselves. It’s transformation through the sphere of media and it’s building up change in our society. Bit by bit, good fruit will appear as more people are equipped and mobilized through the refreshing entertainment they watch at the end of the day.

The program currently airs on Dynasty Television every night from 8:00 – 9:00 pm. We put out new episodes every Saturday, which then goes on re-run for the rest of the days of the week. This gives everyone the opportunity to watch it. Our station has a broadcast range that reaches over 200,000 people, and is the most popular channel in Saint Marc. We’ve had lots of positive feedback and even a request to put more Christian material. We hope in the future to pass out awards to videos made by Haitians in Haiti which carry creativity and storytelling skill, promote cultural identity and moral values, and are relative or practical to the realities of Haiti. Right now we need connections first, as well as more funding to give the cash awards.
