Sports With A Mission!

Sports With A Mission (SWAM);

SWAM is an extended ministry of Youth With A Mission Haiti. SWAM intends to use sports as a venue to disciple youth ages 10 and up. Many Haitian youth feel their lives are destined for misery. Through SWAM we will speak into preteens, teens and young adults Godly destiny. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5.

There are a number of sports that are liked by the youth of Haiti. SWAM desires to keep a broad structure to allow for various types of sports, while formulating guidelines and a discipleship program that can be integrated within any sport. To begin this ministry we will be focusing on the most popular and well known sport, soccer.

  1. To offer leadership to produce an organized sports program where none currently exist.
  2. To develop Christian leadership qualities within those who desire to coach and lead youth.
  3. To teach preteens, teens and young adults Biblical values within a team dynamic, along with personal character.
  4. To utilize games and tournaments as a venue to share short evangelical messages.
  5. To defuse gang activities, offer healthy venues to promote good will and entertainment amongst communities.Caspture

Why a Sports Program?

Most youth in Haiti have no access to organized sports activities. Yet, the Haitian culture often expresses itself through a warrior’s heart and a celebrative spirit. Sports could be a venue where youth could not only learn discipline but also have an outlet for these styles of cultural/youth expressions.

Often you will see Haitian youth involved in “manifestations” or riots. Gangs are becoming all too common. The gangs find issues with each other only to engage in turf wars that involve machetes, knives and guns.

Sport With A Mission (SWAM) desires to offer healthy alternatives for youth through organized sports. In addition SWAM believes that through organized sports we can biblically disciple the rising generation.

Target location:

In the lower 5th section of St. Marc, there are 12 villages that Youth With A Mission have been working with for over 7 years. We feel this is an ideal location to introduce/begin an organized sports program.

SWAM will begin with six villages of the 12 known to us. After these villages experience a successful program, each team will recruit and teach one other village the program until all villages are involvement in SWAM.

Youth With A Mission and Sports With A Mission is dependent on Friends, Family and Christian Communities, National and International, to rally the necessary resources to launch and maintain this program. Currently a trailer is being loaded with a variety of supplies headed to Haiti, including soccer gear. SWAM would like to invite you to join the SWAM team by donating or seeking donations for soccer gear, uniforms, etc., new or used. For information on dates and address for sending sports gear email terry@ywamhaiti.org and write “SWAM” in the subject line. If you would like to make a financial contribution you may make your gift payable to YWAM Haiti and place in the memo line; “SWAM” and mail to;
